Identifying Vaginal Yeast Infection Symptoms

Unfortunately a great majority of women will develop at least one vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime. Some women will have to deal with multiple instances of them.

Early detection and treatment begins with knowing how to accurately identify vaginal yeast infection symptoms.

Candidiasis is the medical term for a condition caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus which infects not just the vagina but also the mouth and intestinal tract. When the vagina is affected with an excessive amount of these fungi a yeast infection, or monilial vaginitis (also sometimes referred to as vulvovaginal candidiasis), will result.

An increase of fungi can be attributed to a myriad of causes. The regular wearing of man-made fabrics that trap in moisture and heat (such as Lycra, ) obesity, diabetes, and antibiotics are but a few of the culprits which contribute to excessive fungal growth.

Women infected with HIV are frequently beset with yeast infections. Testing for HIV should be done if recurrent episodes of infection take place. Over-consumption of sugar, yeast, and starch can also lead to fungal increase.

Symptoms of such an infection are usually readily evident. Vaginal itching and burning are two signs that a problem might exist. Painful urination and intercourse can also be symptomatic of infection. One last thing to keep an eye out for is vaginal discharge, which takes on the appearance of a thick and grey colored secretion with a cottage cheese-like consistency.

Before treating the symptoms, it is critical that an accurate diagnosis is made. The symptoms referred to above may be the result of increased yeast or could be the result of something more serious.

If it is determined that yeast is in fact the reason for the problem, then over-the-counter medications should be considered. A wide variety of creams can be purchased at pharmacies and supermarkets to address vaginal yeast infection symptoms.
